The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently released data showing that deadly traffic accidents increased by 7.7% in 2015. The spike means 2015 had the highest traffic death rate since 2008, a July 5 article of ccjdigital.com reported.
There were approximately 35,200 road fatalities recorded by the NHTSA last year, compared to 32,675 deaths recorded in 2014. In their analysis, the NHTSA noted that pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists were among the common fatalities recorded in 2015. Compared to 2014, fatal accidents involving young drivers, large trucks, and passenger vehicle rollovers also increased. Among the 10 NHTSA regions, only region 6 (New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi) did not have an increase in roadway deaths. The NHTSA is considering the 3.5 percent increase in miles traveled last year a major factor in the number of roadway deaths.
