At this time, there have been up to 16 deaths and 72 illnesses from the Listeria contamination associated with the cantaloupes from Jenson Farms.
There have been reports of the contamination in 18 different states, which has made this the worst food-borne illness in over a decade. Officials with the Center of Disease Control and Food and Drug Administration have said that if a person has cantaloupe and does not know where it is from , it should not be eaten.
A Commissioner with the FDA stated that the number of illness reports is expected to rise because the incubation period of the Listeria contamination can be up to a month. The last shipment of recalled cantaloupes was shipped on Sept. 10 and they have a shelf life of nearly two weeks.
