Although last week’s forecast only called for scattered flurries, Danville drivers experienced much more severe weather than anticipated, making roadways very dangerous. Blowing snow created slick roadways and decreased visibility from Interstate 74 to Bismarck Road.
These inclement weather conditions resulted in at least 15 traffic accidents according to city and county scanner traffic. Two accidents occurred on Interstate 74. Fortunately, only one crash at the corner of Fairchild and Gilbert streets resulted in minor injuries.
Danville officers noted there were several slick areas of roadway where one officer said he “watched three cars slide through.” In an attempt to warn others of the conditions and decrease the number of accidents on certain streets, a deputy “issued a warning over the scanner for traffic turning east from North Vermilion Street onto West Newell Road.”
Unfortunately, far too many drivers fail to take appropriate safety precautions in inclement weather, instead making reckless driving decisions that endanger other motorists.
