A Carmel police officer clocked a white Hyundai traveling 43 mph in a 30 mph zone last Friday, around 10:50 p.m. When the officer turned on his lights to pull over the car, the driver accelerated on 126th Street between River and Hazeldell roads.
Two minutes later, at 10:52 p.m., the Hyundai crashed into a utility pole and caught fire. There were two 15-year-old boys riding as passengers in the car. The driver was also 15 years old.
A driver must be 16 years old to obtain a driver’s license under state law. However, a 15-year-old may obtain a driver’s permit, which allows them to drive when accompanied by a licensed adult relative or guardian.
The identity of the driver is being withheld, although the names of the two passengers have been released. While the parents of the killed boys do not wish to blame the driver of the car, they do question the way that police handled the situation.
The car involved in the crash belonged to the 15-year-old driver’s parents.
Luckily, nobody else was injured in this tragic chase. However, reckless and negligent drivers are a major threat on the road.
