A worker from Belleville recently suffered fatal burn injuries after the equipment he was operating tipped over and caught flame, St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported late last month.
Reports said the 74-year-old man, a part-time employee of Minton Outdoor Services, was operating a commercial lawnmower on Frank Scott Parkway when the accident occurred.
The man was operating the lawnmower at around 7:45 a.m. when it flipped while heading to a raised embankment. Three Scott Air Force Base airmen were driving by and saw the man on fire. They draped an overcoat over him and doused him in water to stop the fire, but he still sustained burns on over half of his body. The man was transported to a burn unit in Creve Coeur and was pronounced dead at around 4:00 p.m that same day. Preliminary investigations revealed that the lawnmower’s gas cover was missing when the equipment caught fire.
